Sarcopenia and exercise

Sarcopenia is the progressive loss of muscle mass, strength, and function, typically associated with aging, though also influenced by factors like inactivity, poor nutrition, and chronic illness. Symptoms include decreased mobility, falls, fractures, and loss of independence, with potential impacts on quality of life. Treatment involves resistance exercise, a high-protein diet, and potentially supplements, while risk factors include age, lack of physical activity, certain chronic diseases, and hormonal changes.

Causes of Sarcopenia

  • Aging: Muscle mass begins to decline around age 30, and this process accelerates after age 60.
  • Inactivity: Lack of physical activity and prolonged immobility can lead to muscle atrophy.
  • Nutritional Factors: Inadequate intake of calories and protein contributes to muscle loss.
  • Hormonal Changes: Decreased levels of hormones like testosterone and estrogen can impact muscle mass.
  • Disease and Inflammation: Chronic conditions such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease are associated with sarcopenia, as are inflammatory pathways.
  • Neuromuscular Changes: A reduction in nerve cells signaling the muscles and changes in mitochondrial function play a role.

Symptoms and Complications

  • Decreased Physical Function: Difficulty with activities like walking, carrying groceries, getting out of bed, or climbing stairs.
  • Reduced Strength: Leads to difficulty performing daily tasks and a greater risk of falls and fractures.
  • Loss of Independence: Can necessitate long-term care and reduce overall quality of life.
  • Increased Morbidity and Mortality: Sarcopenia is linked to worse outcomes after surgery and higher mortality rates in hospitalized and nursing home patients.

Treatment and Prevention

  • Resistance Exercise: Exercises like lifting weights, using resistance bands, and calisthenics (squats, push-ups) are effective.
  • Dietary Interventions: Eating enough calories and high-quality protein helps maintain muscle.
  • Supplements: Protein, amino acids, Omega-3, vitamin D, creatine, and other supplements may be beneficial.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Simple activities like walking can help reduce muscle loss, and it is important to combat isolation and inactivity, especially during illness.

I’m a podiatrist specializing in Biomechanics & gait analysis. 9 out of 10 hip & knee operations can be avoided if both imbalances and diet are addressed. Surgery carries risks and often only addresses the symptoms & not the cause so if the cause is still present you are likely to have problems in the future. Joints must have 1} Good Range of motion and 2} Good muscle strength. You must cut out inflammatory foods: Mainly, sugar, grains & processed foods but sometimes dairy and the alcohol need to go too temporarily. It’s not for ever, some of these can be reintroduced in moderation once you’ve broken the inflammatory cycle in your body. This video covers some great tips for giving the body what it needs to recover itself!
